Babies can be the hardest and rewarding portraits to take, but may also be the most maddening. Babies have a tendency to sleep, eat and cry a lot and won’t pose in front of the camera but do not allow that to put you off snapping them. Making the ideal baby portrait when done correctly will definitely be rewarding. One of the most vital factors in photographing babies is patience and the way in which you apply kid psychology when associated with the baby.

Babies over half a year might be shy and will not react well to a total stranger. This is where kid psychology comes in – you must attempt to play with the baby, or maybe become a kid yourself while taking the image.

The keys of your automobile can be terribly effective. But don’t forget your job is to take a baby portrait; you have to be able to respond fast when the child replies to your entertainment. Shooting a picture of a newly born baby can be tough. At this age the baby won’t be active, so it is better to target close-up headshots.

Try using natural light from a window to add mood to the portrait. Babies over 1 or 2 months of age will be more wary and will have a ton more movement in them. Shooting fast is a prerequisite, the child will tire fast. Babies 7 months or older can be awfully difficult to shoot. The baby will bore quickly and won’t need to stay in the same position. If you really are serious about baby photography and you have a tendency to shoot from your own studio ensure you have plenty of toys to entertain the children.

A light color background will work well and shoot the portraits in color and black and white. Oldsters may be concerned about the affect of studio lights on their baby. Say that strobe lights have no effect on youngsters.

Try and mention this before the parent asks. Do not handle a baby without the oldsters consent. Most oldsters will be extremely protective and will not react well to a stranger lifting their child. Look out for the fingers – fingers in the mouth can be interesting but on most occasions they’ll obscure the face. If you intend to resell the baby picture to an agency ensure you get a release form signed from the folks. There’s an enormous market out there for baby photos but agencies or magazines will not touch them without the oldsters consent. For baby portraits to be sellable they have to be technically perfect, but the picture must illustrate the baby being active or some kind of kid care.
